This section will provide you with a selection of web editing tools. The actual text and layout tools.
The first section deals with editors that are principally basic text (html), some with add-in functionality/ies. In the second section are editors that have greater capabilities, such as xml, and css functions.
XML is a business to business language that allows the integration of data-bases and enhanced cross-browser recognition. CSS are cascading style sheets and are a way of producing a uniform page format (background and text colours, link appearance etc.) for sections of or your whole site. CSS files are stored and loaded as style.css files and then 'called' by the individual pages as they load.
The last section is a stand alone css editor and validator.
All but the most basic of editors allow the insertion and placement of graphics (images), links, forms, frames and tables as preset options. For more details about graphics, particularly graphics editing, go to the Graphics tools index
Full featured web editing tools.
There are several all-in editors on the market, capable of producing a web site from templates, requiring no knowledge other than how to interpret the help file. Whilst these can be a tempting alternative to using the tools listed on this site (fast to set up a site, inclusive ftp client etc.), they have two simple draw-backs.
First, you will never have any idea of how the site was constructed (you choose from the provided templates) so the work is never really 'yours' - plus if anything goes wrong and you cannot find the answer in the help file, you are stuck.
Secondly, they tend to be expensive both in terms of initial cost of the tool and in the amount of web space they utilize.
For these reasons they are not included in this site - there is a place for these tools, bashfulness and common decency prevents me from saying where that place is!
